Comparing two folders is never easy with standard tools. Windows Vista and Win 7 allow you to stretch a window over half of the screen, with great ease, but comparing the contents of two folders is still tedious and time consuming. A file organizer, like Total Commander or other similar applications can help you with this problem, but WingDir is more effective when it comes to comparing folders. It is a simplified version of the aforementioned file organizers, which focuses on showing you the differences between two folders.

There is no need to install this application, because you can run it straight away, after extracting its files from a 135 Mb archive. WingDir was originally designed for Windows XP and Windows Vista, but it has been rewritten to work on Windows 7 as well. You will not have to install additional tools and the application's impact on your computer's performance is insignificant.

You can browse through your folders on WingDir's dual-panel interface. They are displayed in two identical tree menus and their contents are listed, side by side, on the lower half of the window. The software makes it very easy to see if a file is present only in one folder or in both. If a file is present in one folder, but not the other, you will see its entry on one of the panels and a blank entry on the other.

It is possible to filter your data to see files that are present in both folders, files that are different, older, newer and more. Folders are designated as source or target, depending if they are on the left or right panel. Options for copying, moving or deleting items are located beneath the files list. You can only copy or move files from a source to a target and this is why you will find an option for swapping the panels.

You can find options for making the source the same as the target or vice versa, in separate menus. You may also customize the fonts on the interface and select different colors to highlight identical files, newer, older and other types of data.

Pros

WingDir's dual-panel interface makes it easy to compare the contents of two folders. Differences are easy to spot and you can use a series of options to copy single files or to make two folders identical. The application is free and you can use it right away, without going through an installation process.

Cons

Files can be copied or moved only in one direction. Fortunately, this does not make the software uncomfortable. WingDir provides a complete and clear picture regarding the similarities or differences between two folders. Its functions enable you to make your folders the same and perform other actions, without any difficulties.
